Epilogue: Notes from France

Paris
  • This city is super-crowded. It's inundated with tourists.
  • Right out of the train station, we ran into a McDonald's. And a Starbucks.
  • Croissants smell heavenly.
  • People do seem to have a slightly uppity air about themselves. Everything about the place is very rich.
  • My sister and I were mistaken for husband and wife by the hotel receptionist...
  • The buildings and bridges here look a lot like those in Rome, but everything seems just a bit larger, and a bit more square.
  • We saw a brilliant sunset the first night in Rome.
  • I had a terrible stomachache at 3 in the morning. It was not fun.
  • The view from the Eiffel Tower is amazing. You can see the city sprawling in all directions, as far as the horizon.
  • Baguettes are delicious, and super-cheap. They're also conveniently sized for on-the-go munching.

Nice
  • Nice is hotter than Paris, but not as hot as Rome.
  • The water is a brilliant gradient of blue - I can certainly understand the name Côte d'Azur.
  • It was extremely windy the evening we arrived. I needed my sunglasses to shield my eyes from the wind more than the sun.
  • I had ratatouille for dinner. It was tasty, but nothing too special.
  • After taking a half-day tour to Monaco, I'd officially been to five different countries on this trip.
  • Some villages near Nice were built way up in the mountains, to stay clear of pirate invasions.
  • The Monte Carlo Casino is pure extravagance. The cars out front are worth as much as some houses.
P.S. French people must have something against shower curtains... of the three places we've stayed, none have had shower curtains. Sheesh...
