In observance of Independence Day, our professors agreed to give us the day off from classes.
I worked on my Galileo paper a good amount today (it's about 90% done), and went back to the market at Piazza Vittorio. At the market, I took more pictures for our migration project, and also picked up a couple fillets of African perch (they're way bigger than any perch I've seen). I'll try and steam them tomorrow, along with the fresh ginger and (giant) green onions I got at the market. I had to hurry back to the apartment, for fear that the fish would get too warm in the outside heat. Hopefully the cooking goes well!
Later in the afternoon, a group of about six of us went to visit the Capuchin Crypt at the church of Santa Maria delle Concezione dei Cappuccini. The crypt is ornately decorated with the bones of thousands of deceased friars from the sixteenth century. It was something to see, but definitely a bit creepy for me.
That evening, we all went to Profs. Friedman's and Kasaba's apartment for a belated Independence Day dinner. Their apartment is really nice, with super-high coffered ceilings as well as large windows and a sizable outside balcony which open up to the Piazza below. We had catered lasagna and salad for dinner, as well as a large assortment of cream puffs for dessert (there was a LOT of good food). It was a really fun evening, enjoying good food and good company (we even played Uno with Melis).
Another gelato run to Gelateria del Teatro, and the night was complete. A bit more essay work and reading, then off to bed.
